Excerpts from Missy’s recent article in the
Laurel of Asheville, February 2012
“We’ve all seen those breathtaking scenes captured by photographers who travel the world. You don’t need to venture to faraway lands, however, in order to capture awe-inspiring images. Just look around you! Become a tourist in your own town, city, or state. Since we see the same scenery every day, we tend to become somewhat immune to what surrounds us. Living here, one can overlook what sets Western North Carolina and its people apart from anywhere else in the world. The bonus of photographing where you live is that you know the areas and the local hangouts of which most visitors are unaware. Plus you can revisit these areas unrushed anytime without the expense of traveling. Try seeing everything as though this is your first time here. Ask yourself “If I were to move away from here, what things would I miss most?”

“The culture of a place is largely defined by the people who live there. Here in Western North Carolina, you can always find interesting and unique individuals. Wander downtown, visit farmers markets and local festivals, or capture people just going about their daily activities. Take a short drive to a rural town in the mountains and you’ll see an entirely different type of community (and people). I always carry a model release that is printed on a business card, just in case! Do be respectful if people ask that you not photograph them. And always ask permission when photographing children.”
